Landscape Architecture

Change of Major Students

The Landscape Architecture Department is an impacted major at Cal Poly. On-campus students who are considering landscape architecture as a major must satisfy the following requirements before being considered for acceptance:

  1. Successfully complete courses (or equivalents) from the list below as scheduled before the application deadline. If a student receives a grade of D or F in any of these courses, his or her application will not be considered.
    • LA 101 (4) Introduction to Landscape Architecture
    • LA 130 (4) Landscape Interpretation
    • LA 170 (4) Principles of Design Communication
  2. Submit application and the information required by the College of Architecture and Environmental Design as listed below by the end of the fifth week of classes in Winter or Spring Quarter. All materials must be submitted to Ellen Notermann, CAED Advising Center (05-221).
    • Petition to Change Major from the Office of the Registrar (signed by current major department head).
    • Transcripts of college work other than that completed at Cal Poly.
    • Copy of evaluation for present major if outside the CAED.
    • One page statement that identifies prior personal experience and career goals related to the change of major identified. Include reasons why you wish to enroll in this major.

Students on academic probation will not be considered for change of major.

Students will be accepted based on how well they have performed in their course work at Cal Poly, including the landscape architecture courses listed above, and availability of space in the class year for which they qualify. A list of applicants and recommendations will be sent to the Associate Dean of the CAED for approval. Students will be notified of acceptance status by the end of either Winter or Spring Quarter.

Students must have been accepted into the major and completed the first two years of the curriculum in landscape architecture before they are allowed to enroll in third year courses.
