Biography

Brandon has lived his entire life in California, spending most of his time in San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Luis Obispo. After graduating from the Cal Poly SLO Landscape Architecture department in 2010 he landed in Bakersfield for a couple of years, learning how to become a project manager for construction. Much of his time was spent doing estimates, reading plans, and learning the types of products went into a “practical landscape”. After a few years he found himself in San Diego working as a designer for various contractors, specializing in residential landscapes and sustainable/water-wise designs.

He married his college sweetheart (also a CPSLO LA grad), and they were fortunate enough to move back to the Central Coast for work, where he continued on his path as a project manager for construction. The division he worked for started with 10 field staff and approximately $1.5M in annual revenue, and after 7 years had grown to over 35 field staff and nearly $5M in annual revenue.

In the middle of 2023 Brandon switched gears and now works as the owner/principal of Schmiedeberg Designs, focusing on various projects primarily in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. He has learned the industry, participating in events for the local Homebuilders Association (HBA), and sitting on the board for the local chapter of the California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA SLO).

His involvement with other local organizations includes being a past board member for the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden (SLOBG), Young Professionals Networking Group (YPNG), and Cal Poly Rose Float Alumni Association (CPRFSLO), and is an advocate for finding organizations to live for and give to that you can be passionate about.

When he’s not working, Brandon enjoys spending time with his wife and daughters, camping, geocaching, watching/playing sports, and tasting craft beers from across the country. He feels lucky to be living where he is (how can you not love the Central Coast), doing what he does (a true privilege to be creative and flexible in work/life balance), and having an opportunity to give back (to his community, students, and alma mater).
