Biography

Martin Flores is an experienced Public Spaces + Parks Designer for the City of San Diego Planning Department. He designs and directs public space and park planning projects within the City of San Diego. He develops public space and park planning guidelines for Community Plan Amendments and Development Projects, encompassing issues of public access, urban design, urban forestry, open space, public realm, and comprehensive master planning. He reviews designs and construction document plans prepared by private consultants for the City public spaces and park development projects and other City public facilities. Projects include regional parks, community parks, streetscapes, design guidelines, neighborhood parks, urban plazas, and river projects. In addition, he collaborates with communities and makes presentations to City Council, community groups, advisory committees, and the Parks and Recreation Board.

Prior to joining the City of San Diego, he was the Director of Landscape Architecture and Urban Design with Carrier Johnson. His team expanded the services in Urban Design and added Landscape Architecture. Previous to his role at C+J, he was the Urban Design and Planning Director at Rick Engineering Company, a multi-discipline planning landscape architecture and engineering firm with eight offices. At Rick Engineering, he directed efforts in large scale master planning, infill development, public realm streetscape infrastructure, neighborhood smart growth development, river, and urban park projects in San Diego and throughout California and Mexico. Previous to Rick Engineering, as the Senior Landscape Architect for the San Jose Redevelopment Agency, he designed and managed all land development projects, public realm guidelines and infrastructure improvements.
 
Martin Flores (RLA) is a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with advanced courses in Urban Planning from San Jose State University. Martin is recognized as an experienced urban planner and landscape architect. He has guest lectured at Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, and San Jose State University. He is a founding member of the Landscape Architectural Design Council (LADAC) at Cal Poly, Board Member of the Lambda Alpha (LAI) and American Society of Landscape Architects.
