Faculty Biography

Beverly Bass received a BFA from East Carolina University with an emphasis on painting and drawing. She won numerous awards in juried shows for her mixed media art pieces that aimed to conjoin random artifacts from daily life into harmonious designs. She received her MLA from the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona where she was captivated by the rich beauty of the Sonoran Desert. Her main influences during her studies at U of A were Ann Whiston Spirn, Michael Hough and Rob Thayer, as she became interested in finding ways to return ecosystem functions into urban environments as a way to heal damage to the environment and reconnect people with natural processes. Her main areas of research are small town and community regeneration, sustainable neighborhood design and walkable communities.

Prior to joining the faculty at Cal Poly, Beverly practiced Landscape Architecture for six years for an environmental consulting firm in the Sacramento region. While there, she worked in the areas of project management, urban design, park planning and design, environmental restoration and was integrally involved in proposal writing and marketing efforts for the firm. In addition to being a registered landscape architect, Beverly is a LEED accredited professional and an ISA certified arborist. Beverly is a member of the California Central Coast Chapter of the United States Green Building Council.

Beverly teaches upper level design focus studios as well as computer aided drafting and integrated learning classes. She emphasizes the Landscape Architect's primary responsibilities, which are to incorporate ecological processes into the built environment in artful and compelling ways.
