An internship is required for all Cal Poly students who are pursuing a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) degree. The internship course, LA 371, is offered for three units on a Credit/No Credit basis. To learn more about internship requirements, click here.
Internships will be posted as they are received. Postings are uploaded manually at least once or twice a week, depending on the workload in the Landscape Architecture department office. The department may elect to email students directly in lieu of placing a full posting on this site. In that case, only the name and contact information for the company offering the internship will be listed below.

Caltrans Landscape Architecture department is seeking a student assistant to
work with staff to provide technical support in areas such as 3D modeling, 2D
visual simulations, and graphic design for project development and community
engagement as well as other duties to acquire professional experience in the
field of transportation landscape architecture. $17.74-$23.91/hour

Eligibility: To qualify for the program, students must currently be
enrolled in a minimum of six semester units (or equivalent nine quarter
units) and maintain a cumulative minimum of a 2.0 GPA or above with a
declared major in landscape architecture. They also must be enrolled in an
affiliate college of University Enterprises.
Desired Qualifications: Candidates should have good writing, design, and
analytic skills including computer modeling and rendering abilities with an
interest in preparing visual simulations and graphic displays for community
engagement. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, CADD, and Sketchup is
required. Lumion experience is optional.
Hours and Compensation: Students can work up to 24 hours each week during
a school session and up to 40 hours per week during breaks. Students can
work a maximum of 8 hours a day.
Projects/Tasks: In a learning capacity the Student Assistant will assist
in preparing photo realistic visual simulations, 3D modeling, and 2D visual
simulations using digital rendering software for visual impact assessments
and public engagement. Assist in preparing graphic displays for
presentations, exhibits, permit applications, meeting flyers, project fact
sheets, and design studies. Assist in the preparation of erosion control,
planting, irrigation and drafting of plans. Assist in field reviews and in
taking field measurements. Assist in performing calculations to determine
material quantities using excel spreadsheets or other computer applications.
Provide checks for previously calculated quantities. Assist in filing, copy
work, data entry, archiving, preparing, and compiling various reports,
graphs, charts, and letters.

Job Description:
The 2025 internship will be held in person at our office in Oakland, California. Interns will be working 40 hours per week (compensated), with a 10 week minimum, starting at the beginning of June through mid-August.

Mendocino Land Trust
Conservation and Trails Internship
Job Description:
The intern will work as part of MLT’s Stewardship Team on a variety of conservation, stewardship, habitat restoration, and public access trail projects in Mendocino County. These projects will include: stewardship of MLT’s coastal trails and preserves, volunteer event coordination, conservation easement monitoring, new trail planning and construction, and report writing. The intern will also assist with various administrative duties, including grant and permit preparation. The position will report to Anna Bride, Stewardship Project Manager, and will work closely with other members of staff. The internship will last 10 weeks, from mid-June to mid-August (exact dates to be determined). The internship comes with a $6,600 stipend. A rustic housing option is available for the duration of the internship. This housing is located ten minutes by car from our office and costs $600 flat for the 10 weeks.

Job Description:
Norris Design is pleased to continue our Internship Program “Theory 2 Practice” for the 2025 calendar year. This program, in its 19th year, will enhance students’ knowledge of landscape architecture, land planning and placemaking, and will also give students the hands-on experience that will help them become the best landscape architects and land planners in their field. Norris Design’s goal is for students to be able to apply what they have learned in the classroom while working in a creative and fun professional environment.
Internship openings are planned for all office locations in Arizona (Flagstaff, Phoenix, Tucson), Colorado (Denver, Fort Collins, Frisco), Oklahoma (Tulsa), and Texas (Austin, Dallas). Internship dates vary depending on the needs of students and can be a full semester or during the summer months.

City of San Diego
Landscape Architecture Intern
Job Description:
The main duties for the intern will be working with the landscape architects in the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department. There are currently 9 landscape architects working as project managers on a variety of projects, including new park development, developer delivered parks, joint use recreation facilities with San Diego Unified School District as well as doing in‐house design for community gardens, pollinator gardens and other requests by the department.
The main duty of the intern will assist with developing concept level drawings for landscape improvements in existing parks. This may include community gardens, native plant gardens, or revegetation plans for park entrances. This will also include creating standards and visual resources for the replication of these gardens throughout the City.
The goals of the internship are as follows:
- To develop preliminary landscape architectural technical skills and experience in the area of park planning, design, and construction
- To obtain fundamental knowledge of the design, permitting and construction process for public works projects
- To develop communication skills, visual and verbal
- To work closely with operations and maintenance as well as management staff
- To be a liaison to the community and represent the Parks and Recreation Department
This can be a hybrid position, with in‐person work done during school breaks. Interns may only work 20 hours per week during the semester or quarter, but may work 40 hours per week during school breaks.
